Authors state that the hippocampus is the seat of memory in the brain. It is one of the most complex areas and is very sensitive to damaging brain inflammation.

Shrinkage of the hippocampus is considered one of the earliest indications of impending cognitive deficit. PET scanning has shown that in mild cognitive injury and Alzheimer’s disease the energy production for use by cells in the hippocampus is reduced.
