A recent outbreak of E. Coli infection in children playing in lawn sprinklers and drinking from garden hoses has been described in Utah in 2023. While the risk is low, some providers are recommending that children cool off on hot summer days in well-maintained, well-chlorinated public pools. Thirteen children became ill over a two week period, including two who developed the serious hemolytic uremic syndrome that can cause permanent kidney damage and even death.
Many local governments and water authorities have a lower standard and for water intended to be used in lawn care and water from a garden hose should never be considered potable.
