Iron Absorption

Some patients with Lyme disease report anemia with low total body iron status. The following substances can affect iron absorption:
Decrease Iron Absorption:
- medications that impair absorption
- avoiding vitamin C foods two hours before or after meat or seafood ingestion
- calcium
- eggs
- oxalates
- polyphenols
- phytates
- lactoferrin
Increase Iron Excretion
Increase Iron Absorption
- Vitamin C/ascorbic acid
- alcohol
- beta-carotene
- Additive iron products
- hydrochloric acid
- meat
- sugar
- nicotine products
