HLA-DR2

February 14, 2015

HLA-DR2 is a specific protein marker in the major histocompability region of white cells. The general function of MHC proteins is to regulate self-recognition in the immune system.

Experienced clinicians report that patients with Lyme disease who have the HLA-DR2 marker have an increased risk of manifesting autoimmune type symptoms when infected with Borrelia (Lyme disease.)

About 15% of the population carries the HLA-DR2 marker. Status can be determined through a blood test available at most large commercial laboratory centers.
